Self Portrait

In keeping with my focus on the human face and body I decided to do a self portrait. This is stage one of a very long, time consuming process. The first stage is what you see here, a digital base mesh. The next stage will be refining the base mesh. Then posing the facial expression. Then the texturing and detailing (blemishes wrinkles etc..). Then comes lighting and rendering. The plan is for this to be one in a series of four portraits. For me, achieving photographic realism with the human face and body is the ultimate challenge. I’ll be posting my progress on this page.

A new focus

For the last few years I have started to narrow my focus in CGI to the human body and face.  This is a digital sculpture done in ZBrush. This is an anatomy study to help me learn and understand the muscles of the human torso. I started with a digital hunk of clay in the form of a sphere seen in the upper left and gradually sculpted the torso you see here. To specialize in the human body it’s important to know the latin names of the muscles, their origin and insertion points, what bones they’re connected to and how they move. This is what I do for fun in my spare time. who knows how it will end up fitting into my career, but for now I find it fascinating and exciting.

My unique skill set

Sometimes the work you are most proud of doesn’t fit neatly into your professional category but merits a little showing off. This is an image I did in 2002 (if I remember correctly). The client came to me wanting to replace the phone in this man’s hand, but had no pictures of the phone. That’s right, they wanted to replace the phone but had no image. This was before we all had cameras in our cell phones. All they had was the actual phone. And of course (as is usually the case in advertising) it was due “yesterday.” So, there was no time to do a photoshoot. I set the phone upside down on a coffee cup so I could view the perspective right. Within a few hours I illustrated the phone entirely in Photoshop. Cutting masks and painting. Just like in the old “analogue” airbrushing days. I’m proud of this because it’s something I don’t think a lot of artists are capable of. I do a lot of stuff like this as a Retoucher, and I think it goes beyond the expectations of a typical Retoucher, but it’s something unique that I have to offer because of my background as a painter.

My new site

Hi,

Welcome to my world.

This is where I will share new projects I’m working on, and other peoples work I find interesting and inspiring.

I tend to get excited about what I’m working on even if it’s stuff I don’t finish because I get excited about something new. But I love sharing art with people. I believe it plays in important role in our collective conscience. I hope you find it interesting too.
